Abstract

Conventional cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) have several potential complications related to either the transvenous lead or subcutaneous pulse generator, such as hematoma, skin erosion, infection, pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade and perforation, lead dislodgement, and lead fracture. In case of device-related infection, lead or device extraction, which is a difficult procedure requiring several specialized devices, or an emergent surgery would become necessary. To avoid complications related to the lead system or large pulse generator, a permanent, completely self-contained, leadless cardiac pacemaker has been developed. Leadless pacemakers are now under human clinical trials and are expected to be approved in the near future.
